Here's to a nice evening of music I get a little nervous attending shows in the middle of the week -- on a ‘school night’ so to speak. The fear and trepidation stems from the nasty two-headed monster that tends to rear those heads the morning after -- sluggishness from lack of sleep and the splitting headache from hanging out belly-up to the stage with a PBR regularly hitting my lips and the PA assaulting my ears. Athenians with day jobs usually have the luxury of waiting until the band we crave hits the stage on a weekend evening, thus avoiding too many next day dilemmas. Fear not fellow nine-to-fivers, there is a show just for us this Wednesday at the 40 Watt.
Hope for a golden summer makes music that will not leave your ears ringing, and you’ll feel quite comfortable sipping green tea or hot chocolate curled up on a couch (hopefully the 40 Watt will pull them a bit closer to the stage than normal) enjoying the audio flea market that makes them so wonderful...
... The sounds are the product of a makeshift orchestra of sorts that envelopes the listeners in a music and sadness jacket with a soft silk silver lining of hope and possibility. Every now and again you’ll catch a glimpse of teeth peeking out of a grin despite salty tears running down their cheeks. Troubadour Claire Campbell’s tunes seem to come to grips with the fact that we’ll all go through life -- and we can’t avoid being hurt or frustrated, confused and exhausted, but if we persevere and let our hearts do most of the thinking and talking and doing, then eventually life will fall into place, and we’ll realize that the struggle was worth it.
Sharing the stage this evening will be another Athens outfit not known to encourage binge drinking, migraines, and deafness. Audition with Max Reinhardt plays exceptionally Euro-sexy, female fronted, cabaret music featuring accordion, wonderful harmonies, and German lyrics. An experience that’s both easy on the eyes and the ears, it doesn’t matter if you can’t understand a lick of what’s being said like yours truly.
Rounding out the bill is Twittering Machine, from parts unknown. A quick visit to their website reveals nothing about the band or the sound, but I did find a slew of independent film reviews and interesting diary entries that were both vague and personal -- if that makes any sense. So Wednesday night the cheap domestic beer can stay on ice, you can leave the earplugs at home -- and we’ll all keep our day jobs.
