| Observe the simple, haunting beauty of already legendary Southern gothics like Will Oldham, Sam Beam and Vic Chesnutt. These artists make music that, years and even decades from now, will still be revealing sonic intricacies and secrets of its maker’s genius. To this list we can soon add Hope for agoldensummer, an Athens-based quintet that recruits the regular use of esoteric instruments and household objects outside of their intended functions. Led by the bold, all-revealing songwriting strength of sisters Claire and Page Campbell, the group’s debut was recently given the honor of Flagpole Magazine’s Best Local Album of 2004, which put them above heavyweights like Drive-By Truckers, Now It’s Overhead and Of Montreal. Despite the heap of adjectives that spews forth from their debut (“I Bought a Heart Made of Art in the Deep Deep South”), it’s best to hear them play those songs in a live setting. That will be at The Mission on Saturday, with Hellblinki Sextet, Faun Fables and Petrillo Relents. |
